G&T at P.S. 102

Gifted and Talented tests will take place in NYC in just a couple of weeks for those who registered back in November. Though you won't get test results until March, and have until April to apply to G&T programs, we're excited to continue our series introducing you to the various G&T programs offered in the Greater Bay Ridge Area.

If you haven't already seen our "411 on NYC G&T Program Admissions" post, you'll want to start by reading that first for a helpful overview of how G&T testing and admissions work, as well as key dates to keep in mind. And now, without further ado, we're pleased to introduce you to the Gifted and Talented program at P.S. 102 (The Bay View School).

P.S. 102 (The Bay View School) is a large and well-respected public elementary school in the heart of Bay Ridge, located on 72nd Street, just a block from the Bay Ridge Library as well as 3rd Avenue. With nearly 1500 students, it is quite an institution, but families feel a great connection, led by a wonderful parent coordinator, involved PTA, and beloved principal.

P.S. 102 hosts a Gifted and Talented District Program, meaning children residing in District 20 scoring over 90 on the G&T test may apply, however due to the competitiveness and limited number of seats, realistically you shouldn't expect to be offered a seat with a score under 97 (though of course, you never know, so go ahead and apply!). While students residing in District 20 and those with an older sibling already at P.S. 102 will receive priority, there is no G&T priority given for children zoned for P.S. 102.

It's also worth noting that P.S. 102 hosts the free after-school Heart Share Program (students placed by lottery) and also has an Advanced Placement program available for rising 1st through 5th graders personally recommended by their teachers. This is a wonderful alternative to G&T for students who didn't test high enough for a G&T seat, or who found it too rigorous but still need a quicker pace than the average student.
